Supergrass Bassist Falls Out Of Window

Oh my! Story via Uncut: *Supergrass bassist Mickey Quinn is in hospital following a horrific fall whilst sleepwalking, from a first floor window at a villa in France. The bassist and singer for the group has been treated at a specialist spinal unit in Toulouse for two broken vertebrae and a smashed heel. Frontman Gaz Coombes said, "We hope the crazy fool gets back on his feet as soon as possible. I’m sure he’ll make a full recovery; he’s a tough cookie". Supergrass had been taking a summer break after completing their sixth studio album, due for release in January.

Supergrass' show at the Oxford Carling Academy on September 23 has been cancelled as a result of Quinn's injury. The Oxford show will be rescheduled although no date has been set. Ticket holders can apply to the vendor for a refund and will be given first refusal on tickets for the re-scheduled show.* Get well soon, Mickey.

Kooks Frontman Goes Solo & Acoustic In Brooklyn

The Bitch Is Back

People Mag reports: *Britney Spears's long-awaited comeback single, "Gimme More," has finally arrived, and Jive records tells PEOPLE exclusively that the album is scheduled for a Nov. 13 release. The club-friendly dance track officially premiered Thursday night on New York radio station Z-100's Web site. The song's official debut came just minutes after versions of it were leaked to at least two other Web sites, Perezhilton and TMZ. "The track that leaked is off of Britney Spears's forthcoming album. The song is "Gimme More," produced by Danja, [and is] written by Nathaniel "Danjahands" Hills, James Washington, Keri Hilson, Marcella Araica," a Jive Records spokesperson told PEOPLE. The song features the pop star's signature breathy vocals, melodic electronic bleeps over a driving beat and a catchy hook that's is true to the song's title. Spears opens the sexy and sassy tune by defiantly saying, "It's Britney, b---", and producer Hills ends it in a shout out, saying, "Bet you didn't see this coming."

On Wednesday, news of the single's imminent release, which comes from the singer's fifth studio album, was reported by Entertainment Weekly. Also on Wednesday, singer/songwriter Ne-Yo, who wrote several potential songs for Spears, told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show "[Britney has] gotta remind people why they love her in the first place. She's gotta get their minds off her personal life and back on the music." Over the last several months, Spear's personal struggles, including a stint in rehab and the ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, have all overshadowed her career. Still, in May, she performed several live shows in Los Angeles and Florida – during which she performed her old material. Since then, the singer has been seen taking dance classes and shooting a music video. Up next for Spears: She is scheduled to host the opening of LAX nightclub in Las Vegas on Friday. It's not clear yet on if she plans to perform at the event.*

This one dates back to M.I.A.'s early days. In particular, the closing track to her much-loved demo, Piracy Funds Terrorism. However, there's something about hearing M.I.A. rapping over Jay-Z's anthemic, 'Big Pimpin', that you can't help but enjoy. Ben Gibbard Explains Kerouac Fascination

SF Weekly reports: *Like many other songwriters before him, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie is a huge Kerouac enthusiast who has written a couple of tracks in tribute to the author. But it's interesting that while On the Road was an early favorite for this eloquent lyricist, it's Kerouac's later, darker novel Big Sur that Gibbard relates to most these days. "In Big Sur, Kerouac's in his mid-30s and he's already kind of over the mythology that's been created around him since On the Road," says Gibbard. "He's a woeful alcoholic and everywhere he used to haunt is now overrun with these wannabes. He's cynical and he's drinking more and at some point [Lawrence] Ferlinghetti says, 'I have this cabin and you should go down there and just dry out for a couple weeks.'" The book shows Kerouac in a struggle to pull meaning out of his fame, his drinking, and his friendships. "He's trying to re-create all these moments in his life that are so important to him, but now they're so long gone it's kind of pathetic," adds Gibbard.

It just so happens that Gibbard has embarked on a two-week solo songwriting trip to the Big Sur cabin where Kerouac wrote his novel named after the picturesque beach community. He lucked into the rental by taking part in a documentary about Big Sur produced by Kerouac's nephew and so far involving such luminaries from the writing and music worlds as Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Tom Waits, and Jay Farrar. At 31, Gibbard talks candidly about the arrested development many artists — musicians and otherwise — realize they've stumbled into once they leave their 20s behind. The parties and the travel and the excitement of youth get a little more complicated once you hit an age when your peers are worrying about diapers, marriages, and mortgages. "I don't want to be overdramatic about it, but I'm starting to see a lot of my bad habits get the best of me," Gibbard admits. "Living this life in the same sorta way that Kerouac lived ... you get to hang out at shows and drink and you're able to not really face reality and adulthood the way most of my friends are."*

Bowie Set For 'Doctor Who'

SP reports: *Rock legend DAVID BOWIE is set to star in the next series of British TV series DOCTOR WHO, playing an alien. Producers of the BBC show have targeted the Ziggy Stardust singer because of his "great other-worldly looks" according to reports.

British newspaper The Sun claims the 60-year-old will clash with actor David Tennant's Doctor in a two-part episode of the show, which will be aired next year.

A source tells the newspaper, "Bowie said he'd be interested as long as he's not subjected to hours of disfiguring make-up."*

It's hard to believe that Oasis' breakthrough debut record, Definitely Maybe, will turn thirteen years of age today, August 30th. OTYI #44: 100th B-Day Celebrated With 170,000th Cig

Via Daily Mail: *An iron-lunged pensioner has celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting up her 170,000th cigarette from a candle on her birthday cake. Winnie Langley started smoking only days after the First World War broke out in June 1914 when she was just seven-years-old - and has got through five a day ever since. She has no intention of quitting, even after the nationwide ban forced tobacco-lovers outside. Speaking at her 100th birthday party Winnie said: "I have smoked ever since infant school and I have never thought about quitting. There were not all the the health warnings like there are today when I started. It was the done thing."

Winnie, from Croydon, South London, claims tobacco has never made her ill. She has outlived a husband, Robert, and son, Donald, who died two years ago aged 72. The former launderette worker said she started the habit in 1914 - just weeks after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28 - which sparked the First World War. The 100-year-old, who is awaiting her telegram from the Queen today, said smoking helped calm her nerves during the two World Wars. She said: "A lot of people smoked during the war. It helped steady the nerves." Despite the numerous health warnings, Mrs Langley insists she's never suffered because of the habit as she "has never inhaled".*

O'Death: Catch 'Em While You Can

Tonight, one of The Music Slut's all time favourite bands, O'death, plays the Spielgeltent on Pier 17 in New York. If you are in the area and a fan, or just curious, we encourage you to go out and support them. There won't be another local show in quite some time. The boys will soon be headed out on another European tour and lead singer Greg Jamie will be mounting his own solo American tour in the next few months.

Buy a Spielgeltent ticket here. We know they are a bit pricey but Spielgel is such a cool venue that it is worth it. We'd also like to give props to how awesome, funny and just plain dead on Ticket Central's summary of the group is:

Five guys, maybe three shirts between them, take to the stage. There’s a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals. Then they all start howling, stomping; it’s an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks and weathered vocals from another time. Their fans, an ever-expanding congregation, sing along and follow the band with an almost religious fervor, and as vocalist Greg Jamie’s eyes roll back into his head there’s a sense that something almost sinisterly spiritual has overtaken everyone in the room. This is the world of O’Death.

Check out this interview with VBS.TV the group did last month (VBS by the way is not Vacation Bible School TV, but a totally awesome new online music channel begun by those wacky kids at Vice):

Moz Responds To NME Misquotes

Via True To You: *I would like to stress to members of TTY that the recent quotes on NME.com attributed to me concerning "retirement" and "final concerts" were not made by me, and that the NME are wrong to put my name next to these quotes.

Furthermore, I would like to stress that my knowledge and involvement with "season tickets" and ticket prices for the upcoming shows is zero, and I have nothing at all to do with the way by which tickets are sold or priced. People who think I am involved in that side of the presentation overestimate me - I actually have pitifully short legs - there's only so much I can do.

Thanks to those of you who have bought tickets, and thanks to those even considering coming along. With so many US concerts this year your loyalty has already been over-stretched, so if you decide to pass, that's OK.

Before the world got its official taste of Show Your Bones' 1st single, 'Gold Lion', this pre-released remix was absolutely ubiquitous. Now, 18 months since its debut, the reinterpretation stands the test of time quite nicely.

Amy's In-Laws Call For Winehouse Boycott

Drama! NME's got more on the verbal tirade: *Amy Winehouse's in-laws have called on her fans to boycott her records to help her get off drugs. The parents of her husband Blake Fielder-Civil have said both the singer and their son are drug addicts and are in denial.

"Georgette and I both believe that they are drug addicts, and they don't believe they are," Giles Fielder-Civil told BBC Radio 5 Live this morning (August 28). "I think they believe they are recreational users of drugs, and they are in control, but it seems to Georgette and I that this isn't the case." He suggested that the pair were taking crack, and on occasion there had been heroin use. Giles also said he had asked the source of their drugs to stop supplying the couple but they had not kept to their word, while his wife added that she feared for the pair's lives.

"I think they both need to get medical help, before one of them, if not both of them, eventually will die," explained Georgette, with her husband adding: "We are concerned that if one of them dies, the other will die. They are a very close couple, and if one dies through substance abuse, the other may commit suicide." He then called on fans of Winehouse to show her that she needed to change her ways and send a message "that her addiction and her behaviour are not acceptable". "Perhaps it is time to stop buying records," he suggested, adding that with the singer nominated for next week's Mercury Music Prize she should not win any awards either. "It's a possibility, to send that message."*

After The Jump: Missing T-Shirts

Hey guys, we were wondering if you could help us out with something. We made a bunch of t-shirts to sell during the festival Saturday for our charity and left them on the couch in the second stage area during the night show. Somewhere between Free Blood and Riot In Belgium, they all disappeared.

We totally understand they were awesome and just sitting there and maybe you thought they were free but if you could bring them back, that would be great. It's for the kids.

Leave an anonymous tip at TheMusicSlut@gmail.com or drop them off at Matchless or Pianos. We won't tell, we promise. It was all just a big misunderstanding.

The Killers Team Up With Lou Reed

The tune is called 'Tranquilize'. Brandon Flowers shares more details about the duet and an upcoming B-Sides compilation with NME: *"We were thrilled with being able to work with Lou Reed. The song was calling for a duet and his voice was just right. The sentiment of the song is very him. There's a desperation to it. It's one of our more depressing songs, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm a big fan of 'The Masterplan' by Oasis and 'Hatful Of Hollow' by The Smiths. It's for our fans who want the whole collection in one package."*

Rumor Of The Day: My Bloody Valentine Reunion Tour?

The Daily Swarm seems to think so: *A My Bloody Valentine reunion has long been the subject of intense speculation, with a seemingly endless stream of rumors surfacing each year about tours, reissues, DVDs, box sets, and even brand new recordings – but as of today none have come to fruition. The band formed in the mid 1980s and released a series of EPs on various labels before solidifying around the lineup of guitarist/singer Kevin Shields, drummer Colm O’Ciosoig, singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher, and bassist Debbie Googe.

After signing to Creation Records, the band released several EPs and two albums, 1988’s Isn’t Anything and 1991’s Loveless, now considered one of the era’s most classic recordings. After a bitter split with Creation, the band signed to Island Records (UK) in 1992, but never produced another release. According to a 1995 interview with Simon Reynolds, the band’s inability to meet their own aesthetic expectations and the financial stress of inactivity led to Shields’ “meltdown.” The rest of the group drifted apart and My Bloody Valentine simply vansihed without ever releasing another album.

In recent years, Shields has been an elusive yet constant presence on the music scene, appearing on recordings and stages with groups like Experimental Audio Research, Curve, Dinosaur Jr, and Primal Scream. His solo work as a remixer and recording artist have appeared sporadically, most notably on the soundtracks for Sophia Coppola’s films Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette. And in the intervening years, the legend of My Bloody Valentine, a band who’s sound was long considered years ahead of its time, has grown much larger in its absence.

But now some tantalizing hints have emerged in the past few weeks that suggest the band is finally gearing up for a return to action. In July, several fans reported encounters with Shields at Primal Scream and Dinosaur Jr. shows in England, Ireland, and Russia, each returning with the same story: that Shields very matter-of-factly spoke of My Bloody Valentine in the very present tense. The fans reported Shields said that two new My Bloody Valentine releases are in the works – an anthology of unreleased 90s material and an album of brand new studio recordings – along with the imminent release of remastered versions of the band’s original studio work. He is also reported as saying, on several different occasions, that a 2008 tour is in the works that will feature the band’s original lineup. (Read some of the reports here, here, and here.) Furthermore, in an interview published earlier this year in Magnet magazine, Shields was adamant about the band’s return: “We are 100% going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something,” he said.*

My fingers are tightly crossed. Rumors are already circulating for a possible reformation of the legendary band for Coachella '08. Hmmm. Download an MBV MP3 below.

Bjork Explains The Voices In Her Head

Here are some snippets from Bjork's recent interview with The List. A fine read, I must say. Classic Bjork MP3 at bottom.

‘To be honest, I would have expected people to lose interest a long time ago, but I was gonna stick to what I have to do anyway. I do feel very lucky that people are still around and still interested.’

'The media always simplifies things and they take one incident that happens for five minutes in one year and then that’s your life for the next ten years.'

‘Normally I spend a lot of my time solitaire. It just felt a bit weird, because I have to be able to write music, and when I walk down the street I have this music going on in my head. That’s my life.'

'All I wanted to do for this album [Volta] was just to have fun and do something really up. It’s about wanting to go out in the physical world and experience stuff.’

‘In my introvert phases I could be in a glamorous hotel or in a log cabin or wherever, but when I am in my extrovert periods, I’m probably more aware of my surroundings. I made Debut and Post when I lived in London, and they’re very London albums. Whereas with Vespertine and Medúlla I was living half in Iceland and half in Manhattan, and you can’t really hear a lot of Manhattan there because I was quite introvert at the time and it was a bit of a domestic bliss period for me, so I could have done them anywhere.’

Raconteurs Hint At New LP Via MySpace Dialog

Try and figure this one out!

brendan: jack why don't you want to tell people about the new album we've got cooking?

jack: I'll tell them when the time is right.

brendan: what time is it right now?

jack: three o'clock

brendan: but the clock on the wall says 2:10

jack: ok, the time is right. The teurs have a lot of new songs in the works people, the writing and structure of them has dissipated and reinvigorated and many times over since we came home from our last shows.

brendan: We got into the studio as soon as we could, or as soon as l.j. would let us.

jack: yeah, matter of fact little jack won't let us do much without his blessing. and trying to get his blessing is like draining blood from a stone.

Brendan: is that why the recording sessions were "drug fuelled", jack?

jack: I was just kidding when I said that brendan, don't believe everything you read. fact of business; don't even believe all the things I tell you when it's just you and me in the room. If little jack's there though, then it's all true.

brendan: well, if you consider acidopholous powder a drug, then yes the tank is full of fuel!

jack: if I was to ever take a drug for pleasure, I would want that drug to be aspirin for all the headaches I get from second hand acidopholous powder and flax seed smoke.

brendan: what about the songs man? Are you with me?

jack: look b, I know that you and patrick are starting a two piece band on the side.

brendan: who told you that?

jack: L.J. did and we're both fine with that, but as a penalty legion and I have decided you'll be forefiting any and all t shirt profits for the period extending to, but not including, January first 2093.

brendan: um........ok, it's worth it.

jack: but as we were saying, the new songs are coming together strong, I hate to even attempt to describe them...

brendan: it would be like dancing about architecture.

jack: or singing about girls.
