O'death Residency At Mercury Lounge Starts Tonight

O'death is one of our all time favourite bands around here and for the holidays they are giving us the present of two nights in a row at New York's Mercury Lounge. It kicks off tonight with the stellar, Salt & Samovar, opening. Also on the bill is the relentlessly kick-ass, Goddamn Rattlesnake. Hoots And Hellmouth are playing as well and though we've never seen or heard of them, we're expecting good things from the Philadelphia-based band.

Tomorrow night's show is looking great too with our new CMJ discovery, Meowskers, opening. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 at the door and O'death is slotted for 11:30pm (expect midnight).

O'Death: Catch 'Em While You Can

Tonight, one of The Music Slut's all time favourite bands, O'death, plays the Spielgeltent on Pier 17 in New York. If you are in the area and a fan, or just curious, we encourage you to go out and support them. There won't be another local show in quite some time. The boys will soon be headed out on another European tour and lead singer Greg Jamie will be mounting his own solo American tour in the next few months.

Buy a Spielgeltent ticket here. We know they are a bit pricey but Spielgel is such a cool venue that it is worth it. We'd also like to give props to how awesome, funny and just plain dead on Ticket Central's summary of the group is:

Five guys, maybe three shirts between them, take to the stage. There’s a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals. Then they all start howling, stomping; it’s an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks and weathered vocals from another time. Their fans, an ever-expanding congregation, sing along and follow the band with an almost religious fervor, and as vocalist Greg Jamie’s eyes roll back into his head there’s a sense that something almost sinisterly spiritual has overtaken everyone in the room. This is the world of O’Death.

Art Brut & O'death @ Studio B 4/18: I Haven't Slept in About 4 Days

Two of my favourite bands played Studio B on the 18th. I only wish that this combination was as winning as it should have been. A number of factors attributed to this less than stellar night: hangovers ("I haven't slept in two days!" declares Art Brut's publicist outside before the show), Studio B getting the bands onstage late, Studio B opening the doors really late and probably most significantly, the timid all ages crowd (sorry).

As unfortunate as all those factors are, Art Brut and O'death are really consumate professionals at this point in their careers. They know that the audience has come to see them act crazy and even if they cannot feed off of a frenzied audience, they still put in an effort to entertain.


This was my...4th? time with Art Brut. I chose this show over Ratatat at Webster Hall. Call me crazy, but the thought of not seeing Eddie Argos as he blew through town was too much to handle. An Art Brut show makes me intolerably happy.

The band previewed some new tracks, which I am sure I will come to love. Eddie cracked a joke about one saying that we had never heard it since it had not been purposely leaked.



As always at Studio B, crazed fans feel it is necessary to jump onstage. Here comes the inexperienced concert goers part. There was one failed attempted by a boy to get up next to Eddie. He only succeeded in nearly breaking my hand that was lying on the speaker as his boot smashed ontop of it. It is still killing me. I turned around, fists blaring but realised he was 15 and I better not.

To those wondering if I stayed for Soulwax. I did not. That would have involved another line and ten bucks I didn't have after Studio B kicked us all out after Art Brut.

O'Death @ Cakeshop: Bringing New Year's To A Frenzy!

There was surely no other NYE show last night that I would have rather been at than O'Death at Cakeshop. The Slut-stars took the stage around 11:30 to a packed and rowdy bunch down on Ludlow Street.

Their set included some newbies but mostly the big guns from their debut LP, Head Home including a rip-roaring version of album-opening 'Down To Rest' which brought the pit into nasty sweaty convulsions. A truly spectacular way to cap off the year. Anyone go to Clap Your Hands? How empty was Hammerstein?

They Put the O in Death

Hey kids, it's no secret that we are big fans of O'death around here (along with every other blog- Heart on a Stick, Indie-licious, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Village Indian, The Simple Mission, Suckapants, WaterCoolerGossip, Who’s Driving the Bus, Yeti Don’t Dance). The Deli Magazine currently has a poll out asking its readers which group should be NYC band of the month. O'death is pulling just ahead Ra Ra Riot and Daylight's for the Birds so head over there, vote for our boys and make it a clean sweep!

In other pretty cool news, in The L Magazine's latest issue they vote O'death at Midway to be their top four things to do this weekend. Rock!

O'death, Nicole Atkins & The Avett Brothers @ Bowery Ballroom 7/14: Banjo String

Early last week, Greg Jamie, of New York rockers O'death, received a phone call. The voice on the other side of the phone introduced himself as John Moore, the booker for the Bowery Ballroom. Moore, recently named one of the most influential people in music by New York magazine, had just seen O'death perform and loved what he saw. He had a last minute opening spot for the Avett Brothers on Friday night and apologizing for the late notice asked Jamie if O'death would be able to play. No apology necessary. Receiving a call from the world famous Bowery Ballroom to play to a sold out crowd on Friday night is every musician's wet dream, of course the band would to it.


The fiddle player couldn't make it Friday night, but no one cared. The core members were there, Greg, Gabe Darling and David Rogers (whom should be voted best looking Indie rocker without his shirt on by the way), and that's all that mattered to the devoted fans who turned out. Friday afternoon, I was casually asked if I would like to go to the show. "HELL YEAH!" I replied. I quickly sent out the blogger bat signal (no joke, we have one, it's on the corner of Orchard and E. Houston, atop the American Apparel store, and beams hot pink in the shape of a fist thrusting a beer cup in the air) for everyone who was going to the show that night to get there early and have a beer with my sister and I in the bar before seeing O'death. Dan Driving the Bus joined us for the beer while Chris Music Snobbery and Amrit Village Indian met us upstairs.


The boys of O'death nervously took the stage at 9:30 and immediately the chaos began. A foot stomping, heart pumping, blackgrass chaos that was so obviously infused with the band's love for the music that you couldn't help but return that love back. A handful of O'death's rabid fans had caught wind of the last minute gig and paid the steep 20 bucks to get in the door. Dressed in their Sunday boots, they chanted, stomped, and screamed requests- it was obvious they were as happy for the band as they were for themselves. About 200 other audience members bobbed their heads with enthusiasm and were introduced to a group that has been hiding in the bluegrass, country parties of NYC.


You can check out O'death's music on their MySpace and at the end of the month, the group will be embarking on an American west coast tour. According to one of their comments, a Norwegian dj just spun 'Adelita' at one of her parties and the crowd went nuts. I love that.


Next up was Nicole Atkins. Earlier in the week, looking for things to see over the weekend, I came across Nicole and listened to her MySpace page. I really liked what I heard. Her voice is very similar to Nellie Mckay's powerful alto.


Friday night, Nicole really shined and kept the crowd endeared to her with coy banter and family shout-outs. Besides her vocal similarities to Nellie McKay, her songs are reminiscent as well but without the political messages. Think also Isobel Campbell, Shiveree and KT Tunstall. The standout track on her MySpace is definitely 'Bleeding diamonds' check it out I beg you. You can download 'Skywriters' here.


And then there were the headliners, The Avett Brothers. I admit it, I've never heard of them. Apparently Chris has seen them twice but their stuff didn't sound at all familiar. For the first hour of their set I was into it (it helped the boys were good looking) but after that I begged Dan's pardon and went to lean against the wall. Eventually I hobbled downstairs and took a seat on the couch by myself. The guys were still playing and we were into hour two. I found a member of O'death and was invited upstairs into the private area where the bands hang out. I was pretty stoked. Never again will I probably get to go back there and though it was cool, I thought it could have been a bit nicer.

Hour two of the Avett marathon waned on and eventually I ventured out again to find Chris in the balcony. Together we watched the final dregs of their act, complete with encore, woman jumping the stage dressed in pink shorts with a thong over them dancing with lead singer Scott and Scott doing a half assed stage dive. Despite an obnoxiously long play time, I liked the group. They are the country version of the Dropkick Murphys. And I REALLY like the Dropkick Murphys.

And thus ended my neverending night at Bowery. Five hours, 7 broken banjo strings, one cookie and endless head bobs later, I was finished.

O'death @ Knitting Factory

December 18th, my sister and I travelled into the city to see O'death at the Knitting Factory. Let me say, that you're a fool if you ever have the opportunity to go see this band live and don't take it.



Seeing O'death is more experience than concert. Their ever growing base of rabid fans know all the words and aren't afraid to shout and sing and stomp to the music. Standing amidst a forest of raised arms, with fists pounding out the beat, it's hard not to get swept away by the excitement.



The fans know the band members and aren't afraid to yell barbs or request their favourite songs- making it a very interactive show. O Death's sound is self-described as 'Blackgrass', a term I find pretty accurate. It's a mixture of bluegrass and dirty rock; an homage and rebirth of down-home country- a trend that seems to slowly, but surely, be growing in NYC.



The band collectively write all the music and lyrics together, a method that seems to work well for them, as hard as that is to believe- but maybe that's because I need complete silence and solitude to write anything.

Band members include Greg Jamie on vocal and guitar, Gabe Darling on backing vocals, ukulele, guitar, banjo and piano, David Rogers on drums (looking mighty fine with shirt off and dreds flying by the way), and Jesse Newman on bass. You can check out their MySpace, linked above, for four of their tracks. Make sure to hit up 'Adelita.' O'death begins their tour January 12th in Philly and heads south from there. Beginning on February 7th, all you lucky New Yorkers will get a weekly dose of them at Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg where they'll be taking up a residency. Be there or be square.
