The Presets Postpone Aussie Gigs Due To Illness

Multi-instrumentalist, Kim Moyes, explains via MySpace bulletin: *This is really been the craziest thing that has happened to the Presets world since we started out 5 years ago. It breaks our heart to do this, but Julian is in such a bad way now that it really leaves no choice. We are now officially postponing the next 3 shows of the Australian 'Apocalypso' tour, that includes the 2 shows in Freemantle (The Metropolis 18 & 19 June) and the show in Adelaide (HQ, 20 June). At this stage we are planning to try and go ahead with the remaining 3 shows including the 2 Melbourne shows (The Forum 21 & 22 June) and the final show in Sydney (The Enmore 23 June). I would personally like to thank all the people who have sent Jules their thoughts and warm wishes, I can tell you it means a lot to him and to us to know you're thinking of him as he is struggling to shake this severe throat infection and fever he has. In the whole 13 or so years I have known Julian I have never seen him this sick and right now he needs to be on his back, in bed.* Presets MP3 at bottom of post.

Following an intense opening set for The Rapture (circa '06) & a ferocious headlining slot at Studio B (circa '07), I expected nothing short of magnificence at last night's Bowery gig. Thankfully, that is exactly what I received. On the pen ultimate evening of their 2008 North American trek, the Aussie duo transformed the L.E.S. stronghold into one giant electro carousel. Fists were raised highest for Beams favorites in the form of 'Are You The One?' & 'Down Down Down' in addition to Apocalypso's first two singles: 'My People' & 'This Boy's In Love'. However, my most cherished moment would have to be their sultry take on 'Steamworks'. It was immediate, perverse & absolutely riveting. Datarock rocked, the Presets set it off and even though I didn't catch all of their set, Lo Fi Fnk captured my heart. With their little Mickey Mouse hats and fun, happy electronica, Lo Fi Fnk bring the joy back to dance music. Starting April 28th, they will be touring all over Europe, including one of my favourite cities, Arhus, Denmark.

Datarock were incredibley photogenic and a great group. Though what possesses people to get so violent at Studio B dance shows, I will never figure out. I almost feel as if these people think that they have to act this way to have fun. But elbowing me in the head and nearly shoving me to the ground just makes me want to kick your ass, not dance.

New rave dance music from Scandanavia, don't think it could get any better. Denmark, Sweden, Norway- I love it all.

I enjoy The Presets, I don't love The Presets. I find the music a bit forced, a bit too dark.

Shot of the sweaty, insane crowd that drove me to the side of the stage (where one asshole ran up to the sound board and tried to mess up all of the buttons and knobs). Best part of standing on the side, when a member of the crew ran onto the stage from the back and tackled a guy who had climbed on stage, diving into the crowd with him in his arms.

The Presets @ Studio B (Matt's Take): Are We Friends Now?

Well, are we? That's what Sydney's insanely talented electro duo, The Presets, was asking Brooklyn last night amidst a swarm of flying bodies, fist raisers, and sweat-drenched attendees somewhere around 2am.

Whereas Friday night's LCD Soundsystem show (review here) had a happy-go-lucky dance-till-you-drop vibe to it, last night's Presets show was a little more, actually a lot more, violent in nature. So much so, that Jen and I scurried over to the soundboard area on stage left after just three tracks. With that said, The Presets were fantastic, albeit visibly confused by the savage crowd themselves.

Julian and Kim wasted little time before busting out the big boys. Singles 'Are You The One' and 'Girl And The Sea' were both played within the first six songs of the set, as was the ridiculously amazing 'Kitty In The Middle' (MP3 below), which incidentally may be my new favorite track of theirs.

There's something about The Presets that truly sets them apart from 'the competition', but it's somewhat difficult to describe. I think one of the major reasons why I adore The Presets is that while their live shows are an adrenaline-inducing cyclone, their recorded material is just as flawless and captivating. Quite the accomplishment if you ask me.

Their debut LP, Beams, is a rollercoaster that you never want to get yourself off of. Well, at least I don't - hell, I want a front-row seat! For info on all their releases, including early EPs prior to Beams, check out the 'Sound & Vision' section on their official site.



Datarock lovers, not to fret. Jen's extensive review (including some amazing photos) on its way, be patient. As for The Presets, their final US date in the indefinite future is tonight at Sonar in Baltimore, Maryland. I expect all of you within 100 miles to shake your tailfeathers and hop down to the show!
