Sufjan Stevens @ Town Hall: Magical Majesty

Sufjan and his butterfly-winged (watch video below) 14-piece band played their first of 3 sold out nights at Town Hall last night. Parker Posey was in the front of the loge section eating it up, as was everybody else in attendance.

Spectactular show commencing with 'Sister' and ending with 'Casimir Pulaski Day' (the set spanned all the way from Michigan to a Christmas tune, all the way to the most recent release, The Avalanche.) Full setlist to come.

Suf told various stories including the song meaning behind 'The Predatory Wasp', why he chose to write and record his own Chistmas tracks, and how Metropolis is obsessed with Superman. At 2 points in the night, PROPS were thrown into the orchestra and balcony (inflatable Supermen and Santas).

Here's a video of the new track he performed: 'Majesty Snowbird' which, was, absolutely amazing. Probably the best moment of the evening. It clocks in at just under 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Band Of York @ Rock & Rare: 28 Minutes Just Isn't Enough

Band Of York played one of their best sets that I've seen last night over at Rock & Rare for the weekly Fabulaun party. In June, I witnessed The Rogue Elephants at Fabulaun (and they were great); Band Of York's blazing 6-song set matched the intensity of that night, if not, surpassing it.

Billy Jean and the gang have really transformed themselves into a top tier live act. Their shows are truly a spectacle consisting of brilliantly crafted glamtastic sing/shout-alongs. I've now seen the band close to a dozen times (including our very own Anniversary Party back in July) and will continue to support these charming lads... even if they're forced to play for under a half hour!

Sufjan Stevens and My Brightest Diamond will be the latest entries into NPR.org's live concert series, with a webcast of their performance at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre tonight. The stream will begin at 8 p.m. with My Brightest Diamond, followed by Sufjan and his "Chinese Butterfly Orchestra". Sigur Ros Gets Covered

Many many times might I add.

The band's official site lists all the covers that they've found up to date (they are suspiciously missing Thursday's cover of 'Ny Batteri' though) in convenient MP3 format.

Some bands try their hand at Sigur Ros eurodance (yes, you must hear it) while others try for an a capella chant-type sound and others, like the one below, attempt an acoutic arrangement.

Manouk - Untitled #1 (acoustic Sigur Ros cover)

All in all, most of the covers are not half bad... when you consider that covering a Sigur Ros song is a daunting task.

Yes, there's even a COUNTRY-themed cover of 'Untitled #7' for you guys and gals too!

Enjoy it and let us know which is your favorite.

Ziggy Stardust Doesn't Believe In The iPod

ContactMusic reports that David Bowie has inked a contract with Nokia, to work with the company on their new music device (so far, unnamed), which will be direct competition to the ubiquitous iPod.

According to the article, he will provide podcasts (hey didn't Apple coin that term?) and playlists but will NOT be the spokesperson.

Take that, Bono!

800th Post: Jarvis Bitchslaps Razorlight And The Rapture

Yikes!

NME's cover story cites the following: "I've always liked people who mess up. I don't like career people - it doesn't seem very appropriate when it comes to music which is about something emotional. Reading an interview with Razorlight is just like reading 'The Economist', saying 'Yeah, well we're going to be really big in America and we think this album's going to follow up the next one' - that's what the record company should be saying, not the people in the band.

"And even The Rapture, who I like, there was an article about them I read which just seemed to be about them being managed by the same people who manage U2. I just thought 'Why do I want to know that?' That's not what music's about. I don't care who they're managed by. I don't care who makes their guitars. I don't care how many records they've sold, really, I just want to know whether they've got anything to say and whether they're interesting."

HIs long-awaited solo disc comes out next month... in the UK, only.

Stephin Merritt Uses Moniker And Promises 2 NEW MAGNETIC FIELDS ALBUMS!

Billboard reports:

It's been nearly 10 years since Stephin Merritt released an album under the moniker the Gothic Archies, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been working on one. Indeed, for every volume of the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books that Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, has produced since 1999, the Magnetic Fields mastermind wrote a corresponding track. On Oct. 10, the Gothic Archies will round up those songs on "The Tragic Treasury: Songs From A Series of Unfortunate Events" (Nonesuch), the same week Handler's 13th and final book in the series will be released.

In addition to the 13 tracks, Merritt also added two bonus tracks, including "Freakshow," which he originally wrote to correspond with the book "The Carnivorous Carnival" but ultimately deemed too depressing. "It's an extremely upsetting song on some level, being such a freak that birds come and poop on you," Merritt tells Billboard.com. "This project, the Gothic Archies, revolves around this sense that the world is terrifying and ridiculous. Instead of taking the straight-ahead rock approach, it's my bubble-gum gothic band."

With song titles like "Smile! No One Cares How You Feel," "The World Is a Very Scary Place" and "Dreary, Dreary," Merritt obviously tapped into the dark sentiments of the children's books. However, his working relationship with Handler wasn't constrained to just the soundtrack, as Handler played accordion on several tracks on Magnetic Fields' critically acclaimed "69 Love Songs." Upon meeting in the late '90s, the two also began writing a musical script together, dubbed "The Song From Venus," which Merritt says is about two-third complete. Merritt will join Handler on his book tour, playing ukulele while the author plays accordion. Lemony Snicket, Handler's pseudonym, is also supposed play percussion. "Yeah, we have to figure that one out pretty soon, I guess," Merritt says, deadpan.

Meanwhile, fans can expect two new albums from Magnetic Fields in 2007, the first of which Merritt promises "will be loud" but will not be supported with a tour. The artist also contributed the track "The Meaning of Lice" to "Plague Songs," a compilation based on the plagues in the Old Testament of the Bible. The collection, which also features Rufus Wainwright, Imogen Heap and Brian Eno, is due Nov. 7 via 4AD.

Exit Clov @ Mercury Lounge: Working Class Heroes

Upon the advice of Buddha (good friend and commenter extraordinaire), I headed over to The Mercury Lounge last night to check out DC's finest, Exit Clov, a band I've only heard about but never actually heard.

The quintet really blew me away. According to the band's MySpace page, they site the following bands under influences: metric, blondie, pulp, blur, moving units, arcade fire, stars, bartok & le tigre. Somehow, if you can believe it, they sort of sound like all of those bands melded together with a taste of The Rapture (perhaps it was the cowbell).

The set spanned the full range of their catalog, which consists mostly of EPs. The turnout for a Monday night was rather spectactular (more than half filled for a non-local, unsigned band, not bad!) and the band even closed the set with a great cover of 'Call Me'. Their record release party will be held at the Rock N Roll Hotel in DC, on October 20th. If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend your attendance!

George Michael Opens Tour... and Bush's Trousers!

From This Is London:

A mature, modest and (almost) scandal-free George Michael took the stage in his first solo concert in 15 years. But the pop star couldn't resist making another controversial dig at George Bush. At the end of the first set Michael sang his 2002 controversial anti-Bush song "Shoot the Dog."

During the number, an enormous balloon depicting a cartoon-ish George Bush rose out of centre stage, drawing whoops and yells from the crowd. But the real surprise came when Michael leaned down to unzip the balloon's trousers, and out popped a British bulldog draped with the UK flag. The dog was stuck to the balloon's inflated crotch, wagging its tail.

George Michael sang his greatest hits to 18,000 fans packed into Barcelona's Palau Sant Jordi arena at the start of his new European tour. With no new album to promote, the concert indulged an audience of mostly long-time fans with favorites like "Faith," "Father Figure" and "Too Funky," while also including newer hits.

Trail Of Dead Try Their Hand At Division

No, they're not splitting.

Here's the latest on their upcoming release.

Billboard reports:

Texas rock outfit ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead will return Nov. 14 with its third Interscope album in four years, "So Divided." As previously reported, the 11-track set includes guest appearances from King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto and Dresden Dolls vocalist/pianist Amanda Palmer.

Among the highlights are a dramatic, piano-addled cover of Guided By Voices' "Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory," the sturdy, strutting "Life" and the multi-faceted closer "Sunken Dreams," which most closely resembles Trail Of Dead circa 2002's acclaimed "Source Tags & Codes."

Elsewhere, the band pushes the envelope on "Stand in Silence," where a quasi-inspirational interlude is sandwiched in between a major-key rocker, and the hyper-rhythmic "Wasted of State of Mind," which builds to an anthemic kiss-off: "caught in a stasis / feel like I've wasted all this time / with people and places who've never related or desired."

"So Divided" is the follow-up to 2005's "Worlds Apart," which has sold less than half of "Source Tags." "I put everything I had into that record, and recording it was a miserable ordeal," group member Conrad Keely told Billboard.com in July. "After its reception I was pretty much ready to retire from music and find another career, convinced that I wanted nothing more to do with making music for anyone. But when we started this new album, which was meant to be an EP, I had a different attitude. Mainly, I tried not to care at all, and approach it with a more 'I don't give a f*ck' outlook."

Trail Of Dead will kick off a fall tour with Blood Brothers, Celebration and Brothers & Sisters Oct. 27 in Denver.

Here is the track list for "So Divided":

"Intro: A Song of Fire and Wine"
"Stand in Silence"
"Wasted State of Mind"
"Naked Sun"
"Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory"
"So Divided"
"Life"
"Eight Day Hell"
"Witches Web"
"Segue: In the Realms of the Unreal"
"Sunken Dreams"

Kasabian @ Webster Hall: Stuntmen!

It's been a little over a year since Kasabian's last visit to New York. They were in town for the poorly-attended Across The Narrows festival in Staten Island. The set that day (I think they played at 3 in the afternoon) was flawless and really wowed the crowd, who pretty much was just there to see Jet and hear 'Wonderwall' (Oasis closed the show that evening).

Within that time, the band has released their critically maligned follow up to the self-titled debut, Empire. Last night they showcased 8 tracks from the second release and 5 from the first.

In spite of all the negative buzz around Kasabian (you guys really hate it), I honestly enjoy it immensely. 'Stuntman' and 'Shoot The Runner' have the same swagger as 'Reason Is Treason' and 'LSF', in my book. There are many tracks on Empire that can easily become as anthemic as Kasabian's finest tunes.

Webster Hall's floor was literally shaking when the band busted out 'Empire'. By the time they got to 'Club Foot' there was a massive pit (yes, a mosh pit... how 1994!) that had formed with drunken Brits flailing their arms, screaming along to the 'ahh-ahh-ahh' chorus.

Kasabian closed the show with a tip-top rendition of 'LSF' which the asshole guy next to me had been begging for all night at the top of his lungs.

Apparently, not everybody shares my sentiments on the show. Oh well. What were your thoughts on the show?

Mew @ Webster Hall: The Zookeeper's Boys

Let's take a moment to thank Copenhagen for delivering to us such glorious music, in the form of Mew.

The boys really shined last night. A tighter and more cohesive set than the already mindblowing show in July opening for Bloc Party + Secret Machines. This time we got 45 minutes (compared to 30 at McCarren) and even got accompanying videos, albeit a little creepy, with nearly each song.

'Chinaberry Tree' and 'Special' were brilliant and it was clear to see that Mew was extremely thankful to be playing to a (mostly) respectful crowd in NYC. I think Webster Hall and venues with similar capacities are the perfect space for a band like Mew. You can really appreciate them and their large sound in a room that holds about a thousand or so people.

In case you haven't read it all over the blogosphere already, Beck's new album The Information will get its official release on 10/3 (that's the same day as The Killers' Sam's Town for those keeping score!) Judging from the YouTube videos and the Michel Gondry-produced 'Cell Phone's Dead', it is quite apparent that Beck hasn't lost it just yet.

Pretty nifty, eh?

Kasabian - Empire Review

Ok, so this album has gotten a lot negative buzz since its release in the UK earlier this month. That didn't stop the album from debuting at #1 on the charts overseas. Nor did it stop Noel Gallagher from joining the band on stage for a gig this week singing and playing along to crowd fave 'Club Foot' and Empire-closing 'The Doberman' (MP3 below).

It's true that this sophomore effort lacks the pizzazz of the self-titled debut, but it's still a damn fine record. Kasabian has earned the right to be cocky by releasing another solid album, from start to finish. The 39 minutes that make up Empire are indeed brilliant and entertaining. The band has decided to try to balance out the 'rockers' with some ballads and a bit of experimentation on the new release.

Had this album been 70+ minutes long (I'm talking to you, Be Here Now!), I think my thoughts on the album would be much different. However, this long-player deserves the same attention that you gave their debut. I promise it's worth your time. Why would we lie to you?

Dashboard Confessional To Headline MSG: Pigs Start Flying

Wow.

I'm speechless.

Even more shocked than the Gorillaz autobiography.

Info here.

Does he really have 20,000 fans per major city?

I remember the days when he would have trouble selling out 9:30 Club in DC (capacity = 1200), back in 2000/2001.

Nellie McKay Added To Gimme Shelter

The show is on 10/4 at Hiro Ballroom.

The full line-up now includes:

The Beastie Boys
Nellie McKay
Blue Oyster Cult
The Star Spangles... and more!

Worth the $50 pricetag?

All proceeds go to local animal shelters.

In other Nellie news, I saw in USA Today (of all places...) that Nellie's long-awaited Pretty Little Head will FINALLY see the light of day on 10/24. Can anybody verify this info? Her fan site doesn't know a thing about it.

Gorillaz 'Rise' With An Autobiography

We're just as shocked as you.

Gorillaz have unveiled details of a new autobiography charting the history of the band.

'Rise Of The Ogre' follows the cartoon outfit's antics through their eyes - from the release of their first EP 'Tomorrow Comes Today' in November 2000 right through to their recent show at New York's Harlem Apollo.

The illustrated 300-page autobiography also contains shots from the band's personal photo albums, along with unseen backstage footage.

The book, which is out on October 26, precedes their new DVD 'Phase Two - Slowboat To Hades', which is released four days later....

Idlewild Thinks Big Boi Is A Stupid Name

Hahah, I was wondering why nobody mentioned this earlier.

Here's what Roddy Woomble thinks about Outkast's new album/film Idlewild of which his band shares the same name.

Not sure what's up with this new Outkast album. keep seeing posters for it and thinking I've forgotten about a concert. Not that it's likely Idlewild would play a show with Andre 3000 and Big Boi (what a stupid name). Maybe when our new LP comes out next February some unfamiliars will think we're some sort of Outkast tribute. Could be interesting. Probably won't be.

You can read more on Idlewild's official page, under Roddy's diary.
