Simian Mobile Disco @ The Gramercy: Shakermakers
Back in my college radio days (which are growing further & further away with each passing year), I put 3 albums on heavy rotation. Those LPs were: The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs, Nada Surf's Let Go, and Simian's We Are Your Friends. After the ultimate disbanding of Simian in '05, it was only a natural progression that I'd fall deeply in love with the DJ-based remnants of the group, in the form of Simian Mobile Disco, two years later.
Though I've heard endless touting about their debut New York gig at Studio B a few months back (check out a video of 'It's The Beat', courtesy of 'Sup Mag, here), Saturday night marked my first time witnessing SMD in the flesh (I was double-booked during that particular Brooklyn engagement). Thankfully, I was not disappointed in the slightest with the sold-out performance. Simian's duo of James Ford & James Anthony Shaw share an adoration for gratuitous knob twiddling, obsessive button pressing and an overwhelming desire to please the already overzealous attendees. All of the aforementioned details were mastered with genius-like precision at The Gramercy. Truly terrific!
Complete with a vigorous light show and an elaborate circular monitor set-up, Simian Mobile Disco ran though a great majority of their debut record, Attack Decay Sustain Release. Largest cheers went to 'It's The Beat', 'Hustler' and the show-closing Music Slut-fave track, 'I Believe'. Check out some more photos from the glorious evening and an MP3 of 'Tits & Acid' below. definitely had a blast at this show. smd blew the roof off. solid performance and an incredible light show. was fortunate to be at the studio b show as well. different vibe, more intimate at studio b. felt like you'd just discovered the next best thing. gramercy was definitely a great show, but when you go from a small club-like venue to a theater, it's hard to escape the commercial aspect that comes with bigger venues.
anyone know that name of the DJ's spinning before the SMD set? they were incredible.
