Do you remember the first record that inspired you to want to make music of your own?

Kai: I would probably have to say Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins - I remember pouring over that album learning the songs, which in turn inspired me to write some absolutely terrible music.

Aaron: Help by the Beatles

Sam: Beach Boys - Surfin' Safari. I would listen and dance/run around to that album constantly when I was 6. I wrote a song called "Surf" on a Yamaha Clavinova. The song consisted of me pattering middle C and like G above and rambling "Surf, Surfin', Surf, Surf!", I am not sure I even knew what surfing was then.

Do you remember the first song of yours that got the band excited about Locksley's potential?

Locksley: We were all excited from the very beginning but I think the specific song that was a turning point was "Safely from the City". It showed our range and summed up how we felt as a band in New York.

Do you remember the first show in NYC?

Locksley: The first time we played in New York was at CBGB's Gallery (Locksley backstage at CBGB above). Oh my god that was hilarious. We have a video of it somewhere. We were not very good, and I think we played "Ruff Ryder's Anthem" by DMX. Hahaha!

Locksley & Undisputed Heavyweights @ Southpaw 4/26: Jen's Spring Cleaning

Sorry for the lack of JK posts but in everything I suppose, there are ebbs and flows. These past couple of months have been all about the flow but come June 7th, my life is about to hit a great deal of ebb once unemployment hits...again.

Enjoy a little of my long weekend down time and take a look at a few choice concerts I've seen these past few months but never had a chance to post about. Happy Memorial Day!


Matt and I were really excited for this show. One of our all time favourite New York acts were playing alongside a band I had wanted to see for quite a while. I arrived to the venue slightly ahead of schedule and called Matt from outside.

"Hi, I'm here. Where are you?"

"A few blocks away getting a slice. Is it crazy there?"

::insert crickets chirping::

"Sorry, I'll be there soon."


A free show in Brooklyn on a Thursday night sponsored by amNEWYORK and not a soul around but me, the bored looking bartender and the boys from Locksley reading a newspaper? Shocking people, shocking.

Well anyway, Locksley were great as always; one of those bands whom you hope you aren't screaming into the wind about.


Also playing the ill fated gig were Undisputed Heavyweights, a band I had been meaning to see for a while.

I suppose I had a predisposition to like Undisputed Heavyweights. On a warm spring day, driving around with the windows open while singing to Sinatra for me, is near perfection. 60's style lounge music is just my thing and the Casey Shea led Undisputed bring the lounge lizard back to life with an updated flair. Their smart, poppy music, that makes you smile as your hips uncontrollably swing back and forth, is punctuated perfectly by Shea's cheeky audience banter.

The Silent Years Make it to Round Four...

of the Spin Artist of the Year Contest. Why this contest is still going on when we are already nearly 3 months into 2007, I have no clue but the news that one of our favourite groups are in the final four is pretty exciting. The Silent Years are up against Boys Like Girls while The Rewinds vs. Sam Roberts Band. You can go vote now.

Spin is giving a lot of love to the bands in our Spring Fling showcase actually. Locksley have an adorable full page photoshoot and article in this month's issue.

Speaking of Spin, they named O'death their artist of the day on the 20th. O'death, the little band that could. They have just been signed to Gigantic Records and all those heading to SXSW can catch them in the label's showcase there. Did I ever tell you that I used to be Greg O'death's managing editor on our high school literary magazine? Um not to brag or nothing, but we won the top prize for best HS literary magazine in the country that year...I'm just saying.

8 Questions With: Locksley

We're so thrilled that Locksley decided to participate in one of our favorite features here on the site. Here are their TERRIFIC responses!

1. What's your fave venue in NYC? You can be honest.

Jesse: Bowery to see shows at, we've never played. To play? CBGBs was excellent, but now? I don't know.
Sam: Bowery.
Kai: CBGB
Aaron: We haven't played there, but Bowery Ballroom is hands down the best place to see a show in the city.

2. Would you rather be fergalicious, bootylicious or a hollaback boy?

Jesse: I'm not sure what those things are. But I know Gwen Stefani is not a hollaback girl, so I probably wouldn't want to be the counterpart to the thing she isn't. Or, um, ain't.
Sam: I am bootylicious... So that one.
Kai: Hollaback Boy
Aaron: Apparently you haven't heard our new single, Locks-tastic. (TMS note: BEST RESPONSE EVER!)

3. Excited about the Rapture mini-tour? Dream tour partner?

Jesse: Very excited. We love the Rapture and they are actually a great touring partner. Dream? Maybe the Hives. I think it would be nigh on impossible to stand out, but just the challenge to be touring with the best live band in show business. That would be something.
Sam: It’s pretty awesome. Hives would be fun.
Kai: Very excited, I think playing with the Coral would be great.
Aaron: We're very excited about our shows with the Rapture. They're a great band and they've been really generous in helping us get on these tours. As a band, you sometimes end up playing with groups you don't like that much, but with the Rapture we're all fans so it's like going to an awesome show every night.

4. Are you guys all sick of the endless Beatles references?

Jesse: Not really. It’s a good band to be compared to and not inaccurate. I'm just sick of references in general. It seems like people can't just listen to an album and judge it on its own. Our album is a really good album, comparisons aside. People seem to see that though, through everything.
Sam: It’s always flattering so no.
Kai: Yes, sick of them, but then again we set ourselves up for it.

5. What inspired such young guys to create such a retro-sounding album?

Jesse: It’s still the most fun music. I haven't heard anything before or since that gets me excited quite the way that stuff does. It combined a beat with fun and fun with sex and it’s just excellent.
Sam: Because of what our parents listened to it’s the sound we were collectively most used to.
Kai: This sound is our genetic musical make-up. The sixties sound was the way I learned to lay, so it was unavoidable. Our sound will evolve.
Aaron: It wasn't a pre-conceived notion that we were going to make a retro album. We wanted an album that sounded like us and as close to our live show as possible. Albums today tend to have a much bigger sound and more production. Our producer, Guy Benny, focused on making all the songs sound great without adding too much on top.

6. What was up with not dressing like a superhero on Halloween like everyone else, Sam? Is it because the drummer is always the cool one?

Jesse: Nice question. Stick it to him. He was supposed to be Mr. Incredible, who he very closely resembles.
Sam: We had planned to do super hero costumes. On devil’s night they decided not to do costumes. So I went out and got a costume. Then of course not to look stupid they rushed out and got costumes, leaving me the odd man out. (sad face)
Aaron: The drummer isn't always the cool one. But yes, Sam is the cool one.

7. How do you feel about corporate appropriation of your songs?

Jesse: If the ad/corporate world recognizes our quality and potential and wants to both pay us and get us great exposure, I think it’s excellent. Major labels sign so few bands with real quality. And they NEVER take chances on an unknown quantity. Something has to be already successful before they'll pick it up. If we could be constantly working in commercials and stay independent I would take it any day over signing with a major label.
Sam: It’s cool. It gets our name out there. And it has funded the release of the record. Because of ads we can be more in control of our business decisions.
Aaron: We just think of it as a good way to get our songs out there and fund our band / label at the same time. Without those commercials we couldn't have done our first 2 U.S. tours or our British tour. Obviously we wouldn't want to have our song backing a product we hate (insert funny or embarassing product here), but overall it's good for exposure. And I get lots of phone calls from relatives saying, "I just heard your band in a commercial!" Hurray!

8. Would you let an American Idol contestant cover one of your songs?

Jesse: Absolutely. That's when you know you've got something that really sticks. We don't put out anything we don't believe to be quality, so if they're into it, that's a good sign, it means the appeal is broad. There's nothing wrong with broad appeal. It means a lot of people like what you're doing. Its up to you to make sure everything you put out is quality. We never set out to appeal only to a niche. We do what we like and the more people that are exposed to it and get into it, the better.
Sam: Only if we could play as the backing band.
Kai: Would we have a choice?
Aaron: I'd love to hear an American Idol version of one of our songs. It's always hilarious on that show how they can turn an epic song, into a 1 minute infomercial of a song. I saw a guy on there do a version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in about 45 seconds. I cried a little. That being said, I'd love to hear Clay Aiken sing "Don't Make Me Wait". It doesn't get better than that. (TMS note: It really doesn't get any better than that.)

Locksley, Can You Hear Me Now

As your local struggling Socialist, I find it hard to swallow when a rock band sells a song to a mega corp but I have to admit, I was pretty damn excited to hear Locksley's 'Don't Make Me Wait' on a Cingular commercial last night. Good for them, as far as I know, still an unsigned band.

Locksley was recently chosen as Rolling Stone's best MySpace band. Check them out folks, they truly are great and put out one of my favourite albums of 2006.

Locksley & The Gaskets @ Mercury 12/11: Hugs from Sweaty, Skinny Guys

Last Monday night, two of my favourite bands of the year played Mercury Lounge- Locksley and The Gaskets. I believe my jaw actually dropped when I read the line-up on The Bowery Presents' website. It was a great birthday surprise.

First up, was Locksley. I saw the group perform for the first time on Halloween at the Musebox party. That night, the band were dressed as superheroes (all except the drummer, I think he was James Dean), it was nice to see them in regular clothing this time. Hailing from Brooklyn, Locksley are all 60's Beatles pop. Their sound might be a bit of a one note, but they play that note so damn well. In their act as well as in their music, the band pays homage to their 60's predecessors by wearing mod style clothing and taking a collective bow after their set. It is completely endearing and really solidifies their purpose, making their music come to life onstage. Their new album, Don't Make Me Wait, is a great, happy, stroll down a musical memory lane and if you can't think of what to buy somebody this Christmas, might I suggest it. I have yet to play it for a person whom hasn't loved it.

Next up were my favourite find of 2006, The Gaskets. I still remember fondly the night I first saw them at Pianos in April. They came on after the singer I was there to see, Ryan Star. I had read on Jerry Yeti's blog how much he liked them, so I asked the people I was with if they wouldn't mind staying to check them out. I still get thank yous from those friends. The Gaskets' set that night, so many months ago, blew me away. It is a special thing when you instantly fall in love with music; that is the kind of music that stays with you always.

I was listening to a story on the news the other day about laughter being contagious. For me, The Gaskets are pure joy and you can't help but catch some of their laughter when they sing. Every show of theirs, I find myself acting like a fool, throwing my hands in the hair and obediently clapping in triple time when Ross demands it. The Gaskets are a party in a beat box.

I think you all have read enough about how much we love these guys. But since it is Christmas, I would like to thank Ross and Teddy for so many fun shows this past year, especially for playing our Anniversary party in July- sorry I was so drunk. I hope to see you guys just as often next year.

Anyway, it was a great night, two dancerific bands, two cute guys on my arm and two sweaty hugs from rock stars (that's right, I just called you guys rock stars).

Locksley @ Fontana's on Halloween

I've been obsessing over new find Locksley for a couple of weeks now and thanks to the good people over at Musebox, I had the chance to see them live only a week after receiving the cd in the mail at the Musebox Halloween party.


So before hitting the bars with friends (as a pretty spot on pirate might I add), I headed over to Fontana's to have my picture taken by the event photographer, the fabulous Brad Walsh, and see the group whose album has been in my cd player for the past week. Dressed as superheros (the drummer opted for a James Dean outfit actually), Locksley slowly filled up the wee room at Fontana's after they got going with a few songs. Though I think the album is outstanding, in person I thought the songs ran together a bit too much. The set was tight and energetic though and they stopped in the middle to give away a couple of free drinks to the best costume in the crowd, which was very endearing. They remind me a bit of The Wonders from the film That Thing You Do or like a punk version of early Beatles.

This was my first visit to Fontana's and it's ok. Sort of like a backwards Delancey. The show area though is very cramped and those at the back have a hard time seeing the stage at all. The upper levels are great but it's not the best spot for seeing a show, though the whole underground feel is kind of fun.

Fresh Friday, Music to Get You Through the Weekend: Locksley

There is currently a stack of cds in my room waiting for me to listen to them. Everything from punk to neo-punk. I look at this stack and cringe. When in the hell will I get the time to listen to all of this?

A few days ago, I picked up one of those cds and popped it in the player to listen as I changed to go out that night. Only a few notes into the first song, I turned back to my stereo in surprise. This was good. Not merely passable good, but GOOD GOOD. A glance through the sycophantic notes that came with the cd came across the words, Not signed. This band is this good and is not signed? Crimeny.

Made up of four boys from Brooklyn via Wisconsin, Locksley’s music is Beatles Please Please Me and Revolver combined. It takes the best of the British invasion from of the 60's and 70's and combines them into something fresh, fun and new. Locksley’s sound is unexpected, unlike any band I have seen in recent memory, and incredibly catchy. So catchy in fact that I have had ‘Don’t make me wait’ in my head now for a full 24 hours. This is a band to get on board with now before they get all popular and you have to pretend to be 'so over it.'
