Kimya Dawson Speaks Out About Atlantis Commercial

She shares the following in today's MySpace bulletin: *I guess by now many of you have seen the silly commercial for the Atlantis resort. Sigh. Thanks for the outpouring of concern, but no we were not ripped off. No one is getting sued. I have always been very much against having my music in commercials. My solo music. With The Moldy Peaches it is tricky because it isn't just me. I do say no most of the time, but every once in awhile I have to be willing to compromise and be a group member and not a total control freak. A couple years ago we did that French cell phone commercial with all the soccer balls. This time I agreed to the resort going poor mans Weird Al version of 'Anyone Else But You'. I figured if I am going to be a team player I am going to feel least like beating myself up if the words and voice are not my own. It is just our melody. We were not involved in the rewrite. Anyway, dolphins schmolphins, it's done. I bought my parents a car. So it goes.* Download a Kimya tune at bottom.

Kimya Dawson @ SXSW: Kissing, Screaming, Kissing, Tugging

By sheer serendipity, I caught Kimya Dawson's BPC-curated afternoon set on Day 2 of SXSW 2008. Albeit brief, the gig was one of the more delightful ones I witnessed last Thursday. She chose various selections from her ever-growing discography, but loudest cheers went to her ridiculously random (and equally brilliant) cover of Whitney Houston's 'The Greatest Love Of All'. With Jason Trachtenburg giggling by stage left and Tiny Masters Of Today making a guest appearance on the show-closing Juno fave, 'Loose Lips', it was as if somebody had exported New York's 4th Street to downtown Austin.

Kimya Dawson Analyzes 'Juno' Soundtrack

The former Moldy Peach shares the following with Spinner regarding 'Anyone Else But You': *Me and Adam Green wrote this song sitting in Tompkins Square Park [in Manhattan], sitting on a bench. We didn't write it about each other. We both had other imaginary people in mind. Like our dream best friend/dates. We used to call our crushes "hippies." We would wander around NYC in the cold all night long looking for hippies. I guess this is kind of what we would have sung to our hippies if we ever found them. We didn't find hippies back then, but the song's still nice. I am nine years older than Adam, so he was still kind of a kid back then. It would have been gross if we were singing to each other. It is cute to see Juno and Bleeker sing it to each other, though. It feels right. It's a song for awkward kids. We're old hags now. Pass the torch.* Read more of her reflections here.
