Franz Ferdinand 'Bites' The Bullet On LP3

Alex Kapranos shares the following tidbit with BBC6 in regards to the band's forthcoming junior release (due out in early 2009): *We were gonna call it Bite Hard at one point because there was a song called 'Bite Hard' and we weren’t gonna use that as a song, but liked the phrase. It's quite suggestive but apparently in the States if you say something 'bites' it means it sucks, so if something bites hard, it sucks really badly. So we thought... 'No we’ll choose another title.'*

In the Dark of the Matinee...

So last night, Skyeness managed to wangle an invite to the gala opening of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and U.K. premier (red carpets'n'all) of Billy Elliot Jamie Bell's new movie Hallam Foe, a disturbing tale of voyeurism and creepiness set against the rooftops of Edinburgh. And he has to report that the film was a bit meh although it was beautifully shot and had some top notch performances. Of special note, however, is the soundtrack, featuring slutty faves Sons & Daughters, King Creosote and Franz Ferdinand. The film has already won a Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival for its soundtrack.

And the aftershow party at the Edinburgh College of Art was a showcase for Franz when they came on for a 4 song acoustic set, which included the new Hallam Foe song, Dark of the Matinee and Jacqueline and another one which Skye was so stoked on free booze for that he's completely forgotten what it was (the free sausages on sticks were tip top too! yum!)

It was a really nice set - though the movie song wasn't all that to be honest, but it was great to hear some old faves in a much more intimate setting (last time for FF was in Princes St gardens, which was lacking on the intimate side), although a bit disappointing that only two of the band showed up. Where were the other two slackers!?

Anyway, skye was most excited of all when he bumped into Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian fame (no photos, mind, so you'll just have to take my word for it). Of course, by this point skye was uber-chutnied, and could manage only to bumble on about how much he loved the Murdoch, which got the response "oh, you don't really". Embarrassment ahoy, but you know, you're only drunk every Friday once.

New Franz Ferdinand Record Will Be Synth-Happy

Franz guitarist Paul Thomson tells NME the following regarding work on their upcoming junior release: "[It's beginning to sound very] synth-led, we've gone crazy buying old synths... We played Nashville recently and all the synths short circuited in the heat, we had to play a greatest hits set instead. But everybody was still smiling... We've been recording demos rehearsing, writing. It's going well, it was good to have breather and not impose deadlines on ourselves...the songs are evolving quite nicely."

In an earlier statement, FF said they'd ideally like to have the album released sometime in early '08. Check out my review of their pseudo-secret gig last month at Bowery Ballroom here.

Secret Franz Ferdinand Show Date & Venue Revealed!

Mark your calendars for the following not-so-secret gig... **FRANZ FERDINAND: JUNE 13TH AT BOWERY BALLROOM**

While this date has not been confirmed by the band's management just yet, we've pieced together this article from NME which claims that the Scots will be 'playing Bowery next week' with this upcoming Bowery calendar. The only open date in next week's show list is on Wednesday, the 13th.

If you recall, last week the band teased us with hints of a small-scale surprise NYC show. Apparently, they weren't joking. Since Bowery tix usually go on sale on Wednesday afternoons, I would suggest logging onto Ticketweb and getting familiar with your 'refresh' button sometime around noon. We'll keep you in the loop as more info comes our way...

Franz Ferdinand To Go 'Pop' On LP3

Via Contact Music: Rockers FRANZ FERDINAND are reinventing their sound to distinguish themselves from contemporaries like the KAISER CHIEFS and RAZORLIGHT - by replacing their trademark guitars with synthesisers. The DO YOU WANT TO band are currently working on their third album and are changing musical direction to keep their sound fresh.

Guitarist NICK MCCARTHY says, "We want to be as pop as we can. We're going to lose the electric guitars and play synths. There are too many guitar bands out there now."

I'm actually rather intrigued, I think this might be a good step for the Scots after a somewhat disappointing/critically nixed sophomore disc.
