Prince Plans To Sue YouTube & eBay
A wise move? Reuters reports: *U.S. pop star Prince plans to sue YouTube and other major Web sites for unauthorized use of his music in a bid to "reclaim his art on the Internet." The man behind hit songs "Purple Rain," "1999" and "When Doves Cry" said on Thursday that YouTube could not argue it had no control over which videos users posted on its site. "YouTube ... are clearly able (to) filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success," a statement released on his behalf said.YouTube responded by saying it was working with artists to help them manage their music on the site. "Most content owners understand that we respect copyrights, we work every day to help them manage their content, and we are developing state-of-the-art tools to let them do that even better," said YouTube chief counsel Zahavah Levine. "We have great partnerships with major music labels all over the world that understand the benefit of using YouTube as another way to communicate with their fans." In addition to YouTube, Prince plans legal action against online auctioneer eBay & Pirate Bay, accused by Hollywood & the music industry as being a major source of music & film piracy.
The legal action is the latest bid by the music industry to wrest back control over content in an age where file sharing, mobile phones and video sites make enforcing copyright increasingly difficult. But it is believed to be rare for an individual artist of Prince's stature to take on popular Web sites, while some up-and-coming performers actually encourage online file sharing to create a fan base and buzz around a record. "Prince strongly believes artists as the creators and owners of their music need to reclaim their art."*

Prince Goes Clubbin' With Patti Labelle?
Err, Billboard reports: Prince will open a nightclub at the Rio hotel in Las Vegas, which will host concerts by the artist as well as acts signed to his NPG label. Sources tell Billboard.com that Concerts West/AEG Live, producers of Prince's $90 million Musicology tour in 2004, will be working with the artist on the project, which will launch next month.
A flash graphic on the Web site 3121.com, named after the artist's most recent studio album, includes the Rio plus photos of Prince and such artists acts as Sheila E, Maceo Parker, Floetry, Patti LaBelle, Esthero and Cee-Lo, although it is unclear what connection they have to the endeavor.
It is also unknown how regularly Prince plans to perform at the venue formerly known as Club Rio, which has hosted a topless revue called Club Eroticka since February 2005.

3121

Well, it's been a busy old day on the music slut; 5 posts that have taken us from alt-country to Birmingham rock and back again (although technically, although it's still the 9th for Jen and Matt, it's actually now 1am on the 10th for me). Anyway, to complete our musical smorgasbord, here's a bit of funk... somehow it seems to be appropriate for me to be posting this at this time of night, even if I am stuck in the office translating Horace...
Prince's latest, 3121 has now leaked; due out on 21st March, it'll be Prince's 24th album in 28 years. That's mighty. And this is funky; I'm not the biggest fan, but even I have to say that this has got me grooving my way around the (thankfully empty) office.

weekend update

hey all!
i'm back and have stories to bring you!!
on saturday night i had the privilege of being in the audience for a taping of snl and saw PRINCE!...(thank you katie for the hook-up!) he played twice and although i'm not the hugest prince fan, i will admit he sounded great. only did the new stuff though, blah!
before we got to nbc studios, my crew and i went over to PIANOS where we saw back-to-back-to-back experimental rock/avant garde performances. we witnessed OLIVE AND BLACKHAIR, ELECTROPUTAS and LONELY GHOST. ELECTROPUTAS was by far my fave, a sort of japanese noise mixed with something more friendly like an explosions in the sky or mogwai. i woulda snapped a few photos but knowing i was going over to saturday night live later in the evening, i knew better than to get my camera confiscated by bitchy security guards!
i also saw people in the planes do a fantastic acoustic set at the offices of spin magazine on thursday, those photos/words will be arriving on the site this week, i promise.
not all is dandy in this slut's world, however, as my dog molly decided that a 30 gig ipod would act as a good treat this sunday. she completely destroyed it, wheel, case, battery, you name it. although i can't blame her too much, after all she is a bitch and this is a good reason to get the video ipod, no?!

i can watch radiohead's 'just' a million times now until i figure out what that guy is saying at the end! joy!!
