Bon Savants, Jason Lytle, Pretty Girls Make Graves @ The McCarren Pool Party 7/23: Sorry Jason

I heart the McCarren Pool Party! Despite it being insanely hot and the sets being about half an hour late, I still managed to have a lot of fun- though it wasn't without spurts of boredom waiting around.

The first band up was the Bon Savants. We hung around for a bit while they played, but eventually moved off to the sides for a walk around. The group was ok, but the music didn't stand out at all. They sounded a bit like everyone else. I'm not sure what the last song they played was, but it must have been the single as it was the best of the lot and received a good applause from the crowd.

Download: 'Atomic Age'

While the Bon Savants played, Matt and I checked out the awesome blow-up slip and slide they had on one side of the pool.

And then make our way over to the opposite end to watch some dodgeball. I think watching people pelt each other with balls was the most enjoyable part of the day. Some of those people were really into it! I would have played but it is a little intimidating playing in front of about 100 people.

That guy with no shirt on, Jeff we called him, definitely came out just for the dodgeball. He was hardcore.

Next up was Jason Lytle. Matt's already talked about his set and since I am no Grandaddy fan, I'll leave the comments to him. I will relay this story though: The VIP section for the show is right behind the stage so Matt and I were standing relatively close behind Jason as he performed. At one point, Jason was staring at me and suddenly stopped singing. For a moment he became flustered and told the audience, he forgot the words. Yikes. That's when I told Matt we had to move back.

I find it odd that Jason is touring around still playing Grandaddy songs. Since the band broke up, why doesn't he break out some of his own music? It's very strange. When Mick Jagger plays by himself, he plays his own material. Same with Paul McCartney. I think Lytle needs to stop assuming that people are just going to want to see him perform Grandaddy songs and write some new stuff soon, for his own good.

To end the day were Pretty Girls Make Graves. I really have nothing to say about them. I never really listened to any of their stuff before yesterday but I thought it was good. Nothing I'd probably get too excited about in the future, but I can see the appeal.

Some of the crowd got very into it, but most seemed a bit apathetic. Matt and I left before the end, but apparently they closed with 'Speakers push the air' "and it was awesome."

Jason Lytle @ McCarren Park: Lost On His Merry Way

Hi all! Have a good weekend? About a thousand of you made it out to McCarren Park (in spite of a non-functioning L train, a slow-as-all-hell/rancid G train and sweltering heat) for the JL/Pretty Girls Make Graves show yesterday afternoon.

The Bon Savants opened the show in style but your sluts were too busy distracted by soy dogs and a vicious game of dodgeball to give the band the proper review they deserve. Sorry guys.

Anyway, Jason. The last time I saw him at Other Music I was convinced it'd be the last time I'd ever see him... at least see him perform Grandaddy songs! Well, I was wrong. Not only did he just finish 2 nights @ Joe's Pub, he came out to Greenpoint for a great set in the park. His set was pretty similar to the OM gig. Here's the official setlist, but he didn't stick to it. In fact, much of the middle part was omitted & replaced by 'Lost On Yer Merry Way'. I didn't complain.

Just before he hit the stage with a couple buddies toying with background effects and vocals (it gave it a more Grandaddy feel than the in-store), some chick was taking multiple shots of the group. I snuck in right next to her for a single photo and Jason decided to give me this sad face. I didn't mean to screw up your picture, lady! As you can see the 2 people on the right are still smiling for the other photo. Ha!

Grandaddy @ Other Music, Final NY Show

Well, Jason from Grandaddy, at least.

Other Music was packed to the brim last night for a special intimate acoustic set from Grandpa himself.

Jason stormed through a 35-minute set which featured mostly Fambly tracks. "Summer..It's Gone" and "Disconnecty" (yousendit) sounded fantastic, but it was the show-closing "The Group Who Couldn't Say" which got everybody ooh-ing. Perhaps an appropriate finale.

Throughout the set, the crowd was extremely well-behaved and Jason was so very humble. Also of note, out of the 75 people or so jam packed into the record shop, i would say about 70 of them were guys! Do women really hate Grandaddy that much? I know Jen does and a few other female friends of mine completely dislike the band.

Interesting.

The only other time I saw a ratio of men to women that skewed was when I saw Spritiualized in Philly. My friend Megan was literally the only girl in a room that held 1000+ people. Not kidding! Odd.

Regardless of who was at the show, it was sad that it was the last one we'll ever see.

Grandaddy, you will be missed.

Art Brut 47 Confirmed; Grandpa's Last Visit

Good morning everybody.

So, upon reading a very curious interview with Art Brut 47 this morning, as featured in AMNY, the boys confirmed that yes, We Are Scientists have re-incarnated themselves for 2 nights at the Knitting Factory. Disguised in face paint and masks, the band are purposely vague in their responses to the interviewer's questions but at the very end let it all slip out. In addition to the shows with Art Brut tonight and tomorrow @ the Knit, be sure to check out the band at the KEXP Studios this afternoon... that is, if you signed up for tix already. I'm sure somebody has an extra somewhere.. might wanna Craigslist it.

Jason from Grandaddy's in-store acoustic and INTIMATE performance is tonight @ Other Music. I suggest you get there early as it's going to be madness in there, for sure. It starts promptly at 8pm.

Grandaddy, Just Like The Fambly Cat

Yes, The Music Slut just got our hands on the latest and last Grandaddy record, Just Like The Fambly Cat, and as expected, it's amazing (although Jen might disagree).

I've only seen Grandaddy live ONCE, back in 2000 opening for Coldplay at Radio City. I really disliked them back then but slowly grew to love all albums/tracks the band has released.

I'm sad to hear this is going to be the end of the road for them. However, if they were going to leave us, this is the perfect note to go out on. The hour-long LP runs the gamut from pretty to intense to completely oddball. So, pretty much, it's a typical Grandaddy album, in all its glory.

"Summer.. It's Gone" is an early contender for best track on the album. It's also a song I will definitely repeat this week during what could be, the rainiest week in NYC history (check out this forecast!!).

Here's a track that serves as sort of an interlude, "Oxygen/Aux Send" (yousendit)

For more Grandaddy discussion, check out what Skye had to say a few months back, way before Fambly Cat's official release.

Video Heaven: Flaming Lips and Grandaddy

Living in a world where MTV (still somehow someway) rules the nation and YouTube too frequently has a blurry take on something extraordinary, one must seek out other ways to actually enjoy a music video.

The Music Slut to the rescue!

Here's some braaaaand new videos for your pleasure from Wayne, Jason and their respective bands.

Discuss in the comments.

In related news, Jason from Grandaddy will be doing an in-store at Other Music on 5/17. DON'T MISS IT! (I hear they are not touring for this new album so this will be your last chance to possibly ever see him play live, in a Grandaddy capacity)

"Where I'm Anymore", Grandaddy (quicktime)

"The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song", The Flaming Lips (quicktime)

Grampa's near the end...

...what with Grandaddy having decided to call it a day with the release of their forthcoming LP Just Like the Fambly Cat.

I totally love Grandaddy, though I probably came to them much later than most - I remember reading reviews years and years ago about Under the Western Freeway, which I thought, 'I really must get'. I never did, you know, though I accumulated The Sophtware Slump and Sumday, both of which are records I can listen to all day and into tomorrow.

It'll be a much less interesting world without my favourite Grandaddy...

Here's a track from the (much leaked) Just Like the Fambly Cat. Buy it when it comes out, and show these guys how much we appreciate 'em!
