A Brief Smile @ Midway: Escape Artists

Battling a host of venue-related problems (including but not limited to: an expired liquor license, a broken promise of BYOB, a truncated capacity, an unhelpful/unpleasant staff and a fire hazard waiting to happen), A Brief Smile shimmered at the record release show for their debut long-player, Now We All Have Horns, last night at (the much-dreaded) Midway.

Performing the record's opener ('Escape Art'), closer ('Vicious') and various others in between, the night only served as further confirmation of the band's foreseeable leap to indie stardom over the course of the next few months. The Gaskets @ Midway 1/19: You Brought The Hammer Sugar

Friday night, Club Midway was packed for new party, The Pull Out Method and the headlining band of the night, The Gaskets. I've been called The Gasket's number one fan and a groupie this week (which I really am not, come on guys) so I am going to keep this short and sweet.

Once again, The Gaskets brought party. After the show I heard comments like, "these guys should play at my wedding. It would be the best wedding ever!" and "Jen, that was AWESOME, thank you." No thank yous necessary folks, the smile on your face and fist in the air is thank you enough.

The boys headed down to Richmond, VA after the show to work on recording some new material, of which they previewed last night and is really superb. Not as pop dancey, bit more dark dancey. I've been told that the next cd theme will be about architecture and building (right up your alley I should think Yeti).

Abbey from PunkPhoto was there as well and has some cute things to say about the show and some spectacular photographs over on her blog. Check it out. She also promises us a Youtube video by the end of the week. The adorable Abbey stood next to me while she filmed and I joke that the entire thing is probably just me singing. But no joke, I think it will be. Sorry.

The Music Slut's Pre-CMJ Show @ Midway 10/14: O'death, Ian Love, Adam Streicher and the Molotov Cocktails and David Aaron

First off, The Music Slut would like to thank all the bands that came out last Saturday night to jam for us. Every performance was absolutely stellar. Talking with the Molotov Cocktails afterward, we couldn't help but marvel at how amazing and different every group was. They all brought something intriguing and brilliant to the table. It was truly a great night.


Our first performer of the night was David Aaron. You might remember him from a review I wrote of his show at the CBGB Gallery back in August. Since then, I have been telling everyone who will listen that this guy is about to have the next hit single. And hopefully not one of those one-hit-wonder singles either. Due to some unforseen, um, partying, the night started off a bit late but David soon had the ball rolling and we dove right into...


Adam Streicher and the Molotov Cocktails. A nicer bunch of guys you will not meet. It is one thing when a group makes great music, but another when they combine that with great personalities. It makes you want to do everything you can to help them succeed.


I highly suggest heading over to their MySpace page and downloading 'Jumping trains.' It's fantastic and incredibly infectious. It's also even better in person. You can catch Adam and the gang around NYC and NJ over the next few months:

Next up was very special guest Ian Love. He sang the crowd into silent awe as his majestic songs filled the room. The silence was only interrupted by the thundering applause at the end of each tune. It was really a treat to hear such an amazing perform and talk with him before the show. For all those in the NYC area, Ian will be playing Tonic on November 7th and is also the very special guest of Texas is the Reason at their two sold out Irving shows November 25th and 26th. Apparently, people are flying in from all over the country for the shows.


To close the show, were fast approaching local legend status, O'death. Apparently, Greg plays without any shoes on.


The guys played a rip-roaring set with their stand-in bassist- Jesse was playing another gig. And the guys seemed to have added another element to the act since I saw them last, Gabe and Greg jumping into the crowd. The Gaskets do the same thing and I got to say, I love it.


By the time their set was over, I was drenched in sweat from jumping up and down. My toes were bruised from getting stomped on and my voice was soar from singing.


This guy seemed to really like it as well, he jumped on stage and cut a suspiciously familiar pose...

Guten Tag from Munich!

Hello loyal Music Slut readers,

I just wanted to pop in and say a quick hello from Germany. I've just arrived here in Munich yesterday from a three week long bumble around Northern Spain, seeing friends and getting into trouble. I know my boys are doing a great job keeping down the fort without me and don't worry, come Oct/Nov, I'll be out with a vengance in NYC.

Also, I hope to see you all at Club Midway on October 14th for our second every show. Those darlings of the blogosphere, O'death, are playing as is soon to be teen heart-throb and most talented NYC singer you don't know, Dave Aaron along with Ian Love. There should be some more folks on the bill soon, but it promises to be a great night and hey, who can beat two for one drinks?
