Lily Allen Responds To Radiohead's 'Rainbows'

Here's what the perpetually verbose singer had to remark in a recent interview: *“It’s arrogant for them to give their music away for free - they’ve got millions of pounds. It sends a weird message to younger bands who haven’t done as well... You don’t choose how to pay for eggs.

Why should it be different for music?”*

I think Lily Allen's comment was wrong or right so much as it was incoherent. What is the relationship she's trying to draw between Radiohead's financial success, their decision to give away the album, and other bands' popularity or financial success? Is it bad or good that Radiohead has a lot of money? What is the "message" that they are sending? What is the message that Allen would rather have them send?

Also, although her mindset is no doubt shared by many music industry execs (not to mention James Hetfield, etc.), you would have had to sleep through the last seven years or so to still be clutching on to the notion that music (or more broadly these days, "content") can still be treated like a commodity along the lines of a dozen eggs.

I'm not arguing on behalf of Radiohead's decision to give away the album. Maybe it was supposed to be a comment on the way the music industry works, or on the place of the artist in the world of P2P, or maybe it was just a strategy to reinforce the Radiohead brand in order to secure more sales down the road with concert tickets, DVDs, etc. In any case, I think it won't end up having much of an impact on any of those things, let alone on how "bands who haven't done as well" deal with their albums, or feel about themselves or whatever.

Anyway, lots of those bands have been giving away lots of music long before this Radiohead album came along.

She's right. You don’t "choose how to pay for eggs".
What does happen is that the supplier decides what to charge. I've been given eggs for free many times.

She's a little confused. Bless.

I find it stupid that these artist keep bitchin about Radiohead "giving away their music for free".
Do these people not pay attention to the way the music industry is nowadays. Every album leaks. Every one. Knowing this Radiohead leaked their own album and got a percentage of the people who would normally download it for free to actually pay for the leak.
Brilliant.

It's as simple as this: Radiohead owns their music. They can do whatever they want with it. If they want to give it for free, that's their business. If they want to charge X amount of dollars, fine.

Same with Lily Allen. If she wants to charge $15 a CD for her shitty music, that's her deal.

$15 a CD? You're joking right?

I'd pay 1.5 pence for an EGG!

Silly little girl.
