Compact Disc Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Wired's blog reports: *An obsolete form of optical media known as the "Compact Disc" celebrates its 25th birthday today. In a press release issued Thursday the 16th, Philips said a staggering 200 billion of them were produced (194 billion of those accounted for by AOL sign-up disks) since the first one was stamped off the production line on August 17th, 1982.

"The first CD to be manufactured at the plant was “The Visitors” by ABBA. By the time CDs were introduced on the market in November 1982, a catalogue of around 150 titles – mainly classical music – had been produced. The first CDs and CD players – including Philips’ CD100 – were introduced in Japan in November, followed by a US & European market introduction in March, 1983."

Though the CD is past its prime, the form factor & basic technology saw renewal in the DVD and, later, next-gen formats such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. Anyone remember how the thing was originally marketed as being indestructible? Remember those green pens that audiophiles would pay $20 for under the belief it would make the data sound better?.*

What was the first CD you ever purchased? Mine was Green Day's Dookie back in '94!

my family was a rather early adopter of this new technology. I remember my dad getting our first CD player, a Magnavox, for our family at Christmas in 1985. he bought me Wham's "Make it Big" and got my mom Lionel Ritchie's "Dancing on the Ceiling". i think the first disc i bought with my own (lawnmowing) money was DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" in 1988. aw yeah.

Cake's Fashion Nugget. It was also the first cd I had confiscated by my parents when my mom heard those great lines from Nugget: "Shut the Fuck Up!"

My first CD was unfortunately Aqua's debut album (Barbie Girl anyone? and then their attempt at being respectable? Hilarious to look back now...)

My mum and dad still have a CD player from 1986 when they got it as a wedding present - and it still sounds better than many CD players of the moment!
