Polaris Prize Nominees Revealed

For those out of the loop, The Polaris Prize is awarded to the best album released by a Canadian musician over the last twelve months, judged solely on artistic merit. Last year's big winner was Final Fantasy's He Poos Clouds, here are this year's nominees. Top honors will be chosen on September 24th. The Polaris winning artist will receive a $20k check alongside an enormous amount of respect.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
The Besnard Lakes - The Dark Horse
The Dears - Gang Of Losers
Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up
Feist - The Reminder
Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye
Miracle Fortress - Five Roses
Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
Chan VanGaalen - Skelliconnection
Patrick Watson - Close To Paradise

Is anybody out placing bets against heavy favorites, Arcade Fire or Feist?

The music coming from Canada is absolutely amazing. This list is proof.

I've only heard about half the artists on this list, but if I had to pick from that bunch, I'd have to go with The Besnard Lakes. It's an album that you can't really listen to passively. You get so much more out o it if you just sit back and pay attention to the music, and it's ultimately more rewarding that way.

I completely agree with Carri. The Dears are completely underrated and should be recognized for one of the BEST albums ever.

But of course Arcade Fire will win!

Last year had a similarly stacked list of heavyweights (Broken Social Scene, Metric, New Pornographers) -- but the prize went to Final Fantasy.

I'm not criticizing that choice, because He Poos Clouds is a really great album, but out of all the artists on the list he was almost certainly the least well-known in the wider world outside of MP3 blogland, and was very much the dark horse choice.

So this year's jurors may well decide that Neon Bible and The Reminder are already doing well enough without their help, and choose to pump up another underdog.

In other words, if you think they're going to follow the same pattern as last year and bestow their blessing on an artistically daring album by an unknown who deserves much wider exposure than he's getting right now, put your money on Miracle Fortress.
