Matt & Kim @ Bowery 3/9: Falling Bodies
Photo courtesy of The Culture of Me (thanks buddy, nice shot)
I came prepared to Friday night's Matt and Kim show at Bowery. I wore sneakers, old jeans and a light top. I was ready to sweat, stomp and loose a shoe.
I missed the first opener, but stumbled successfully upstairs for Prof. Murder who really brought some great dance music. I am always impressed when an opening act can successfully win the audience over, I've seen so many groups at Bowery fail to do this, but P. Murder did a great job at keeping up the pace and keeping the attention.
I don't know if Matt and Kim's music is particularly brilliant, but it is fun. Coming in, I hadn't listened to many of their songs. In person, they do meld together with a similar driving, pounding, beat, but they do lend to some joyous moshing and some rather insane crowd-surfing. The bouncers hit the stage when one insane concert-goer leaped from a stage speaker nearly as high as the balcony. Matt stopped at one point to ask if everyone was ok, he had seen a lot of people go down hard.
Matt also commented on the low ticket price, notifying us that he had to speak with the owner of Bowery to explain why he wanted to charge so little. He apparently just wanted to charge a price that he personally could afford. Matt and Kim might not be reinventing the wheel, but they are creating music with more class and personality than a lot of musicians out there.
PopTartsSuckToasted danced with me.
