Radiohead Gets Creepy At Starbucks!

Oh geez. KCRW & Starbucks are teaming up to release 'Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project'. The album, which will be available on March 13th in most major cities, will include The Flaming Lips' take on Radiohead's 'Knives Out' and Damien Rice's version of the band's first massive single, 'Creep'. For Radiohead enthusiasts, these covers aren't exactly new but I have mixed feelings about hearing them at Starbucks, of all places.

Also, what's probably more upsetting is that album sales will NOT be going to a charity. No, not even partially. According to Bitchfork, 'proceeds from album sales will assist the station in digitizing its huge music library'.

Err, I love you KCRW, but I don't know about this one. Anyone else as ambivalent as me?

This is the email I just sent to Raul Campos of KCRW.

I've been streaming you guys for about 4 years from all over the globe.
Listening to Ruth Seymore(sp?) talk about the increased royalty fees being
levied against radio stations that stream over the internet, I was
geniuinely considering donating to your "venue for showcasing alternative,
new artists". I was just listening as you mentioned that your "Covers
Project" is being sold at Starbucks. Gross man. Just Gross. Sounds like
you guys might be finally breaking out of that independent jive that you so
treasure.

Need I mention their labor practices and the adverse effect they have, along
with other part-time-only labor employers? Need I mention INVASIVE
MARKETING and the belief that no area shouldn't be free from advertising?
Of course, you guys are "independent" so I'm sure you're all cognizant of
that, and weighed the decision to release records through them carefully.
What epic betrayal.

FOR SHAME man.
