Daft Punk: Kleptomaniacs?
Prefix has directed The Music Slut to a new YouTube feature highlighting the sample techniques of Daft Punk, French electro-pop extraoridnaires. It appears as if most of the band's biggest hits have been direct samples, or, er, replicas of disco hits from the '70s/early '80s. Hmm. While this doesn't make Daft Punk any less amazing (find me one person who can honestly say they don't bust a move to Homework or Discovery's singles), it perhaps puts their credibility/orginality in question.
I could have told you this. Check out a series of discs called Sampled Vol. 1 thru 4, where they have all the original songs that Daft Punk "lincensed".
Sorry but, is this really 'news'? I don't think Daft Punk have ever denied their love of sampling. I guarantee you they had to pay for each and every instance. 'Robot Rock' is probably the most blatant offender because it doesn't do anything terribly exciting with the original but in the case of all the others I certainly found the Daft Punk versions better than the sample source (particularly Barry Manilow).
5 seconds sniplets of songs really doesn't do justice to Daft Punk's sampling techniques. If you compare complete Daft Punk songs to the complete originals, you'll find that Daft Punk's alterations are usually quite special. They often use an intro or break section from a song and leave the original hook alone. This site has some tracks and you can compare complete versions.
daft punk is still superior, samples or not. if you want original go become an ethnomusicologist and find some buskers in slovenia that nobody's ever heard of and have them make records.
Hello I'm a french daft punk fan, and I want to say that around the world, their biggest track, wasn't based on a 70's sample. daft punk : 3 albums : 5 tracks based on a sample, it's not a crime

daft punk sample songs, they don't steal them! All artists have sampled other artists at least once. Why not sample a part of a song you like and make it better? No reason why not.

The important thing is not the sample but what they do with it. And I think we'll all agree that Daft Punk does a great job.
