Saddest Song Ever Written
Well, they asked and, err, some geezers responded.Rolling Stone recently conducted a poll and here's how their readers voted for saddest song ever written:

Sad doesn't even begin to cover it. Most of those - James sodding Blunt, Robbie Williams, Elton John, Will Young, Will fucking Young!!! - transcend sad and go straight for deeply and painfully embarrassing.
How can a sad songs list exclude the likes of Nick Cave (Brompton Oratory springs most readily to mind), Billy Bragg (Valentines Day Is Over), Tom Waits (Bad Liver & a Broken Heart), Bob Dylan (You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go) or Eels (Stars Shine In The Sky Tonight)?

This is a pretty unimaginative list. If Sinead is going to be there, it should be for her version of Elton John's "Sacrifice", which was truly heartrending. But what about Nina Simone's "Why? (The King of Love is Dead)", Bob Dylan's "If You See Her, Say Hello", Lou Reed's "Berlin" album in its entirety, Tim Hardin's "Hang on to a Dream", Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat", The Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"? Or am I confusing melancholy with sadness?
How about anything from that first This Mortal Coil album?
"Fake Plastic Trees" is by no means the saddest Radiohead number--I guess it's just the one most people are familiar with. I'd nominate "How I Made My Millions" (a B-side). It's never failed to make me tear up. Runner up would be "Lucky."

ok im not a John Mayer fan, but i have this song he sings called 'Comfortable', and it just gets me, so much.

and i dont know why, but REM 'At My most Beautiful'
they're just some that i can think of now
I think by far one of the saddest songs ever written and performed is by Tracy Chapmin called Baby Can I Hold You.
It is about loved lost due to stuborness and I almost will instantly cry when I hear because who hasnt been so stuborn that they would rather lose someone they love than admitt they are wrong.
