PROFILE: A Brief Smile

Wow. As you can probably guess, The Music Slut gets a lot of music sent our way. I mean, A LOT. We really sort through it all (every single MP3/CD) to try to find some quality and once in a while we come across something truly remarkable to present to you, our dear readers. A Brief Smile is one of those bands that I cannot stop gushing about. Even though I just received their EP, r.e.s.t., the other day, its songs are slowly but surely creeping into my top played and most treasured tracks of the year.

r.e.s.t.'s songs are the kind that Hope Of The States should have made on their disappointing Left. It's the direction you wanted A Place To Bury Strangers to move towards but where they never quite arrived. (NYC's very own) A Brief Smile incorporates the best of late Spacemen 3/early Spiritualized with Trail Of Dead, Low and some early Verve. It's incredible, moving and powerful. There's even a slight, or maybe even heavy, at times, post-rock feel which for any of you know really know me, realize I totally adore. In spite of all the above influences, the songs not only stand on their own two feet, they are also unbelievably catchy, the way BRMC used to be. For goodness sake, check out this band!!!
