Sufjan Stevens @ Town Hall: Magical Majesty

Sufjan and his butterfly-winged (watch video below) 14-piece band played their first of 3 sold out nights at Town Hall last night. Parker Posey was in the front of the loge section eating it up, as was everybody else in attendance.

Spectactular show commencing with 'Sister' and ending with 'Casimir Pulaski Day' (the set spanned all the way from Michigan to a Christmas tune, all the way to the most recent release, The Avalanche.) Full setlist to come.

Suf told various stories including the song meaning behind 'The Predatory Wasp', why he chose to write and record his own Chistmas tracks, and how Metropolis is obsessed with Superman. At 2 points in the night, PROPS were thrown into the orchestra and balcony (inflatable Supermen and Santas).

Here's a video of the new track he performed: 'Majesty Snowbird' which, was, absolutely amazing. Probably the best moment of the evening. It clocks in at just under 10 minutes. Enjoy!

The fun thing about Predatory Wasp is that the story changes every time he tells it, sometimes slightly, and sometimes drastically. At Saturday night's show he got really detailed, even giving the name of the friend he saw the bird-wasp with and describing the friend's entertaining laugh.

Hi! He did do an encore. He did two songs. Both acustic. For the life of me the first one isn't coming to mind. It'll probably hit me at 3am. The second one he did was "Dress Looks Nice on You."

I'm jealous you heard "Casimir Pulaski Day"

Oh and I had to steal your video of "Majesty Snowbird" to put on my blog. This song is so beautiful.

I wonder what the set-list was tonight?

yep here

Rain bird, laughing in the olive tree, la la dee dah
Colored shirt, with the alabaster altarpiece, you gave to me
Summer sweet, some forgiven
Your advice is all that seems to matter much to me
Call it sweet, call it something paradise

Is it the right word you designed for me?
Is it the broken word or good advice i need?
Is the half as sweet set aside for me?
Is it mysterious? is it something ripe and sweet?

Snowbird, your sister said she needed me, la la dee dah
Show them first, show them what you did for me, la la dee dah
Quiet sound, and little soldier sent beneath
And epaulets that covered every shoulder
Call it sweet come take
Forget the things I said, to please

Is it the right word you designed for me?
Is it the broken word or good advice i need?
Is the tapestry set beneath my wings?
Is it mysteroius, glorious? Indeed.

Don't stop, don't break
You can delight because you have a place
Quiet room, I need you now

Is it the right word?
Is it the broken word?
Is it the tapestry?
Is it the majesty?

Is it the right word?
Is it the broken word?
Is it the tapestry?
Is it the majesty?

Don't stop, don't break
You can delight because you have a place
(x5)

Quiet room, i need you now...
