Supergrass @ Webster Hall: Like Falling Masonary

Back in our college years, Jen & I saw an overly vapid performance from Supergrass at DC's beloved 9:30 Club. That evening came as a huge shock as it was my first experience with the band in a live setting and I was expecting nothing short of brilliance. It was also particularly upsetting since I was mildly obsessed with their self titled LP (released in 1999) and spun its singles regularly on my radio show. Thankfully, last night's set was a vast improvement from that disappointing soiree. Juggling tracks from their new release, Diamond Hoo Ha, with a series of older selections, Supergrass had the sold out crowd eating out of their respective palms. Particular highlights include 'Mary', 'Moving' & 'Diamond Hoo Ha Man', 'Lenny' & 'Caught By The Fuzz'. Photos & MP3 below.

The Duke Spirit @ Webster Hall: Dark Is Light Enough

Riding a tidal wave of SXSW buzz, earning a mountain of critical acclaim for their new album (Neptune) and donning a Christian Siriano approved ensemble, I had high hopes for Liela Moss and the gang that comprise London's The Duke Spirit. Sadly, last night's set seemed a little forced, a tad bit flat and quite uninspiring (much to my heart's chagrin). Perhaps I caught the band on an off night or perhaps TDS's magic is truly lost on me. Regardless, visit The Duke Spirit on MySpace and judge for yourself. Setlist & MP3 below.

(Setlist) Send A Little Love Token. Lassoo. Dog Roses. My Sunken Treasure. The Step. Into The Fold. Wooden Heart. This Ship. Red Weather. Love Is An Unfamiliar Name.

Ryan Adams Fires Back At Courtney Love

The cat fight continues with today's message: *I've realized and accepted that if people decide to dislike me, they're going to find reasons to justify disliking me. There's nothing I can do about that. That said, it still does pain me to be accused of fictional crimes against innocents or to be implicated in romantic gossip involving the possibly reality challenged however unreliable the source or outlandish the accusations. In the end, however, I know that I have never done or even meant anyone any harm.* Read the full rant here. Download a Ryan MP3 at bottom of post.

Conor Oberst Defends Britney Spears

He tells Blender: *We played The Tonight Show last fall and went across the street to this Mexican restaurant. The place was swarming with cameras. Britney Spears was eating in the other side of the restaurant. The way people treated her was the saddest, most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. It was like the circus. I couldn’t shake it for a couple of days.*

Duffy Supports Illegal Downloading

Here's what she had to say in a recent Q&A: *Some people think it creates illegal access, but I think the big wheel is round, y'know? I think it's got more positives because it basically gives people access, what's the harm in that? Somebody asked me the other day what I thought of illegal downloading, and I thought, 'You know what? I don't care', because I think the majority doing it are kids and as they get old and get more income they'll probably buy records. So it's just making music a part of everyone's lives.*

Friendly Fires @ Mercury Lounge: Something Must Break

Friendly Fires are young. Friendly Fires are British. Friendly Fires have spent the better part of the last few years perfecting their unique & jangly dance pop via repeated listens to !!!, New Order & LCD Soundsystem. Last night's show served as a teaser of what's to come (the band's self titled debut LP is out internationally on September 1st) and it was magnificent. Electrifying frontman Ed Macfarlane hops around the stage like a bizarrely magical hybrid of Ian Curtis (Joy Division), Luke Jenner (The Rapture) & Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode). Meanwhile, each & every FF track is concise, charming & absolutely addictive. To say that we're eagerly awaiting their NYC return would be a massive understatement. Visit Friendly Fires on MySpace. Photos, setlist & MP3 below.

Grizzly Bear Frontman Chats Radiohead Tour With Vindy

Here's what Ed Droste had to say in this week's interview: *It's always been kind of a joke with our band like 'Yeah, we're going to go on tour with Radiohead someday'. And everyone would laugh, like that's the most unrealistic thing ever. And then they released In Rainbows and our booking agent submitted us for it. We didn't hear anything for a long time. Then the next thing we heard they chose us. I guess they don't even take submissions and they pick whomever they want. I still can't believe it. Like I have a weird fear and there's going to be a last minute cancellation. It's surreal.*
